Two National Guard Members Dead in Urgent Washington Shooting
BREAKING: Two members of the West Virginia National Guard have tragically died following a shooting near the White House on November 22, 2025. Governor Patrick Morrisey confirmed their deaths in a social media post, stating, “We are in ongoing contact with federal officials as the investigation continues.”
This shocking incident unfolded at the intersection of 17th and H Streets in Washington, D.C., just two blocks from the presidential residence. A suspect is now in custody and has sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Emergencies were declared as all three individuals involved in the shooting were rushed to a nearby hospital, as reported by Vito Maggiolo, the public information officer for the D.C. Fire and Emergency Services. The Joint DC Task Force and the Metropolitan Police Department were on the scene, cordoning off the area with police tape as emergency vehicles and helicopters responded to the crisis.
President Donald Trump, currently in Florida for Thanksgiving, expressed his outrage on social media, vowing that the “animal” responsible for the shooting “will pay a very steep price.” He added, “God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People.”
This incident comes amid ongoing discussions about the presence of National Guard troops in the capital, which has been controversial in recent months, particularly regarding their deployment to combat crime. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also voiced his concern, stating he is “closely monitoring” the situation and expressing his heartbreak for the victims.
Local leaders, including Mayor Muriel Bowser, are actively tracking developments. Bowser had been engaged in public events earlier in the day, underscoring the urgency of this crisis.
The shooting has intensified the debate over the military’s role in domestic law enforcement, particularly after Trump’s emergency order in August that federalized local police and deployed National Guard troops to assist in various capacities. Last week, a federal judge ordered an end to this deployment, but the decision is currently on hold for 21 days, allowing time for possible appeals.
With the city on high alert and more information expected from ongoing investigations, the impact of this tragic event resonates deeply within the community and beyond. Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops.
