UPDATE: A bizarre midair incident has left a United Airlines jet with a cracked windscreen while flying at 36,000 feet, injuring the captain. The incident occurred on October 17, 2025, during United Flight 1093, which took off from Denver and was en route to Los Angeles.

Just 37 minutes into the flight, near Moab, Utah, the Boeing 737 Max began an unexpected descent, alarming passengers and crew. Data from Flightradar24 indicates that the aircraft abruptly turned north and diverted to Salt Lake City, landing safely after 10 minutes of descent.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has confirmed it is actively investigating the incident. In a statement on social media, the NTSB noted, “We are gathering radar, weather, and flight recorder data regarding a cracked windscreen on a Boeing 737-8 during cruise flight.” The damaged windscreen is being sent to NTSB labs for further analysis.

Images circulating on social media show shattered glass within the cockpit and a bloodied forearm belonging to the captain, raising concerns about the severity of the incident. Aviation enthusiast JonNYC reported the damage, suggesting the presence of scorch marks on the aircraft may indicate it was struck by space debris or a small meteorite.

United Airlines confirmed the windscreen damage, stating, “The plane landed safely in Salt Lake City to address damage to its multilayered windshield.” Passengers were transferred to a new aircraft, which arrived in Los Angeles at 1:12 p.m. PT, approximately five and a half hours late.

The original plane has since been rerouted to Chicago Rockford Airport, where maintenance will be conducted. United Airlines assured passengers that its maintenance team is working diligently to return the aircraft to service.
