University of Louisville Launches Swift Course to Teach Economics
URGENT UPDATE: The University of Louisville has just announced a groundbreaking class that will utilize the career of Taylor Swift to teach economics. Titled “Swiftonomics,” this innovative course invites students to examine economic principles through the lens of Swift’s monumental career, including her record-breaking Eras tour.
The class encourages students to engage with real-world economic questions that fans are already discussing, such as the complexities of concert ticket pricing and the trade-offs involved in scheduling events. “She’s had a huge economic impact. She’s an incredible business person. And so we thought, well, let’s try this,” explained Beth Munnich, the associate professor of economics who helped develop the course, in an interview with WMUR-TV.
Currently, “Swiftonomics” is a one-time offering, but Munnich hopes the course will become a permanent fixture in the university’s curriculum if student interest is strong. This trend of integrating Taylor Swift into academic settings is not new; other institutions have already explored her cultural impact. Earlier in 2023, Stanford University introduced a course titled “All Too Well (Ten Week Version),” which provided an in-depth analysis of Swift’s iconic 2012 song, while the University of Texas, Austin offered “The Taylor Swift Songbook,” an honors course that compared her lyrics to classic literature.
In addition, Queen’s University once included “Taylor Swift’s Literary Legacy” in its Cultural Studies program, and New York University launched a course focused on Swift’s journey as an artist and entrepreneur in 2022. The University of Louisville’s course may also incorporate Swift’s upcoming docuseries and concert film set to premiere on Disney+, though details remain undisclosed.
This new class not only highlights the cultural significance of Taylor Swift but also introduces an engaging method to teach economic concepts. Students are likely feeling especially Enchanted by the prospect of earning college credits while delving into the fascinating world of music and economics.
Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops and as we learn more about the potential success of “Swiftonomics” at the University of Louisville.
