URGENT UPDATE: A frost advisory has just been issued for multiple counties in Pennsylvania, effective Friday from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that temperatures will plunge into the 30s, creating conditions ripe for frost formation, which could devastate sensitive outdoor vegetation.

Affected areas include Franklin, Dauphin, Lebanon, Cumberland, Adams, York, and Lancaster counties. Residents are advised to take immediate action to protect their plants. The NWS states, “Frost could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation. Sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered.”

The advisory emphasizes the potential risks to agriculture as frost could lead to significant losses for farmers. “Those with agricultural interests should protect sensitive vegetation,” officials urge. Coldest temperatures are expected in sheltered rural areas and valley locations, highlighting the need for vigilance among gardeners and farmers alike.

Frost advisories are typically issued from May to October, but they can be extended based on weather conditions. The NWS explains that frost formation is most likely when temperatures dip to 36 degrees Fahrenheit or below. In severe cases, frost can be classified as a “killing frost,” which signals the end of the growing season.

To mitigate damage, residents are encouraged to cover sensitive plants before sunset on Thursday to help retain heat, or to move them indoors if possible. With the risk of frost looming, now is the time to act to safeguard your gardens and crops.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing weather situation, and share this information with friends and family to ensure everyone is prepared for the chilly conditions.
