Winter Park Doctor Avoids Charges in Underage Drinking Incident
UPDATE: A Winter Park physician, Hao Nhu Tran, 51, will not face criminal charges after being accused of hosting a house party where minors consumed alcohol, leading to a 15-year-old girl being hospitalized. This urgent decision comes just days after her arrest on October 12, 2023, for contributing to the delinquency of a minor and providing alcohol to those under 21.
In an unexpected turn, prosecutors announced on Monday that they will not pursue charges against Tran, citing that “evidence at trial will not overcome one or more affirmative defenses.” This revelation raises critical questions about responsibility and accountability in such situations involving minors.
Authorities report that Winter Park police responded to Tran’s residence on Chestnut Avenue shortly after midnight on October 11 after multiple calls indicated that children were “falling down drunk.” Officers discovered empty alcohol containers from brands like High Noon and Smirnoff strewn about the kitchen, suggesting a chaotic environment where underage drinking was rampant.
Tran claimed she was hosting a gathering for her son’s school event, but she admitted that unfamiliar children from other schools also attended. During the party, a 15-year-old girl reportedly “passed out” from drinking and was later found unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom. Tran made the decision to call the girl’s mother, who then contacted 911. When emergency services arrived, the girl was reportedly vomiting and barely coherent.
The girl’s mother expressed she did not wish to press charges against Tran, yet it was noted that Tran initially hesitated to call for medical assistance, complicating the situation further.
As a licensed medical professional specializing in ear, nose, and throat diseases, Tran’s actions have drawn significant public scrutiny. The absence of charges against her may stir a larger debate about parental responsibilities and the consequences of enabling underage drinking.
This alarming incident is a stark reminder of the dangers associated with underage alcohol consumption. With no criminal charges filed, the community is left questioning the implications for future events and the broader impact on youth safety.
What happens next remains unclear, but the implications of this case could resonate throughout the community, prompting discussions about accountability and preventive measures for underage drinking. As the situation develops, many will be watching closely to see if additional actions will be taken by local authorities or community leaders.
