Israel Expects Return of Soldier’s Remains Held by Hamas Since 2014
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday that Israel is poised to receive the remains of Lt. Hadar Goldin, a soldier whose body has been held in Gaza since his death during the 2014 conflict between Israel and Hamas. This significant development marks a potential resolution for Goldin’s family, who have awaited his return for nearly a decade.
Goldin was killed in the closing days of the 2014 Gaza War, and since then, his remains have been in the possession of Hamas. Netanyahu stated that Israel anticipates the transfer to occur in the afternoon. Following the handover, the Israeli military will conduct tests to verify Goldin’s identity “immediately.”
Hamas confirmed earlier on the same day that the return of Goldin’s body would form part of the ceasefire agreement that concluded recent hostilities in Gaza. This agreement has drawn attention to the broader context of Israeli-Palestinian relations, particularly in light of the ongoing tensions and humanitarian issues in the region.
In a statement released on Saturday evening, Goldin’s family expressed their hope, saying, “We are waiting for Hadar to be returned to us.” They also mentioned that the chief of the Israeli military had briefed them on the “tremendous effort” being made to secure Goldin’s return.
The return of Goldin’s remains holds significant emotional weight for his family and symbolizes a step forward in a long-standing issue that has affected many families in Israel. The situation surrounding prisoners of war and missing soldiers remains a critical point of discussion in Israel, and Goldin’s case has been particularly poignant.
As the day unfolds, many will watch closely for updates regarding the transfer. This story continues to develop, with anticipation surrounding the potential closure it may bring for the Goldin family and the Israeli public.
