Crews from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will close sections of northbound Interstate 5 (I-5) from October 24 to October 27 to conduct essential roadwork and replace concrete slabs. This closure affects all northbound lanes between Interstate 8 and the Mission Bay Drive on-ramp, with the road expected to reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday, October 27.

During this period, drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes, including State Route 163, State Route 15, and Interstate 805, to reconnect with northbound I-5. Specific on-ramps will also be closed, including the Moore Street on-ramp in Old Town and the westbound I-8 on-ramp at Taylor Street. Additionally, the Morena Boulevard off-ramp and on-ramps at Camino Del Rio West and Sea World Drive/Tecolote Road will not be accessible.

While these closures may impact some drivers, Metropolitan Transit Service bus routes to La Jolla and University Town Center (UTC) will continue to operate normally. Notably, Bus Route 30 will take a minor detour from Old Town to La Jolla, while Route 105 will remain unaffected.

This closure is part of the ongoing I-5 Asset Management Project, which aims to enhance existing infrastructure and improve safety along this vital freeway. The project has prompted several closures in recent weeks, indicating a significant commitment to upgrading the region’s transportation network.

For real-time road conditions, drivers can check the FOX 5/KUSI Live Traffic Map, which provides updated information on traffic and detours in the area.
