UA Little Rock Professor Joins National Documentary for America’s 250th
Dr. Arya Basu, an assistant professor of computer science at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, has been selected to participate in the national documentary initiative titled “Our American Story.” This project is part of the celebrations leading up to America’s 250th anniversary in 2026. The initiative seeks to create the largest audiovisual archive of American narratives, which will be preserved in the Library of Congress as a living time capsule for future generations.
The “Our American Story” project aims to capture the diverse experiences and ideas that have shaped the United States. Each participant shares their unique journey, values, and vision, contributing to a broader understanding of the themes of innovation and perseverance across all 50 states. Dr. Basu stands out as the only researcher from Arkansas to be featured in this initiative.
From Personal Struggles to National Recognition
Dr. Basu’s interview took place at the Old State House Museum in downtown Little Rock on October 6, 2023. He described this historic venue as an “aptly chosen” location filled with significance. “I was speechless and spellbound,” Basu remarked. “Even now, I can’t believe they found my story. Being part of America’s 250th celebration is an honor I never imagined.”
A computational scientist, Dr. Basu specializes in human-computer interaction and biomedical visualization. His recent research is particularly inspired by personal experiences, including his mother’s challenging heart surgery and the passing of his uncle, an applied physicist who ignited Basu’s early passion for science. “My uncle had a huge impact on who I am as a scientist,” he stated. “Those experiences with my family taught me that science, like life, is about compassion and persistence.”
During his interview, Dr. Basu reflected on his journey from India to Arkansas. He shared how the state’s natural beauty and tranquil environment have influenced both his work and mindset. “When I first crossed the Mississippi River into Arkansas, I was struck by the abundance of trees and the sense of peace,” he explained. “Science, like good soul food, comes from a soul that is at peace with its environment.”
A Message for the Future
When asked about the message he hopes to convey for America’s 250th birthday, Dr. Basu emphasized the importance of perseverance in both scientific endeavors and nation-building. “Persistence is what keeps this nation moving forward,” he said. “Building a nation is not easy, and maintaining one is even harder. For the next 250 years, I hope we never lose sight of the need to stay persistent in pursuing what our collective hearts know is right and important.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Basu’s research will focus on human decision-making and spatial reasoning, with studies on maze navigation and the use of eye gaze signals to enhance artificial intelligence for U.S. Air Force mission needs.
Being featured in “Our American Story” is both humbling and meaningful for Dr. Basu. His family expressed immense pride upon learning that his story would be preserved in the Library of Congress. “My family is over the moon,” he said, adding that some joked about a potential political career. “But truly, they’re proud that something from our story is now a part of American history.”
For Dr. Basu, the entire experience has reinforced his belief that science, compassion, and creativity are interconnected threads that unite all Americans. “Science has no borders,” he remarked. “It’s not just where you are that matters. It’s what you strive to contribute to the world. Being part of this project reminds me that every story, no matter where it begins, can inspire something greater.”
