Major Recall: Over 2 Million Pounds of Beef Jerky Pulled from Stores
LSI, Inc., based in South Dakota, is recalling more than 2 million pounds of ready-to-eat Korean barbecue pork jerky due to potential contamination with metal pieces. The announcement was made on October 24, 2023, by the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
The recall specifically affects approximately 2,277,540 pounds of the product branded as “Golden Island fire-grilled Pork Jerky Korean Barbecue recipe.” These items, sold in plastic pouches weighing 14.5 oz and 16 oz, were distributed to retail locations including Costco and Sam’s Club throughout the United States.
Details of the Recall
The withdrawal has been classified as a “High-Class I” recall by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which is the highest classification level indicating a situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious health consequences or death. Consumers are advised to check their pantries for the affected products and to avoid consumption.
In a statement, FSIS emphasized the importance of food safety, urging anyone who has purchased the recalled jerky to either discard it or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
LSI, Inc. has not reported any injuries or illnesses associated with this recall as of the announcement. However, the potential for contamination raises significant health concerns, prompting the swift action to protect consumers.
Retailers such as Costco and Sam’s Club have been notified and are cooperating with the recall process. They are also working to ensure that all affected products are removed from their shelves promptly.
Consumer Guidance and Safety Measures
Customers who have purchased the recalled products should look for specific packaging details to identify whether they have the affected jerky. The recall includes products with various sell-by dates, and consumers are encouraged to refer to the FSIS website for a complete list of details.
Food safety experts recommend that consumers regularly check their food products and stay informed about recalls to ensure their health and safety. While this recall has raised alarms, proactive measures and consumer awareness are essential in preventing potential health risks.
For further updates, consumers should monitor announcements from the FSIS and the USDA, which provide comprehensive information regarding food safety and product recalls.
