James Carville Comments on Controversial Democratic Win in Virginia
Democratic strategist James Carville sparked controversy during a recent episode of his podcast, “Politics War Room,” by joking about running a convicted felon as a candidate for the Democratic Party. The remarks followed the election of Jay Jones, the Democratic attorney general-elect of Virginia, who won on November 7, 2023, despite facing criticism over violent text messages he sent in 2022.
In the leaked messages, Jones expressed a desire to harm then-Republican state House Speaker Todd Gilbert, stating that he would give Gilbert “two bullets to the head” and urinate on his grave. Carville’s comments came in response to Jones’ surprising victory, as he suggested that even a candidate with a criminal background might defeat a Republican opponent, citing the impact of President Donald Trump on the Republican Party’s image.
During the podcast, Carville remarked, “I’m personally going to find a convicted pedophile and run him in a race just to see if he could beat a Republican.” He added, “I’m not sure. I’m not going to say that a convicted pedophile could win,” while laughing. This controversial joke highlights the state of the Democratic Party as it navigates through various challenges and perceptions.
Carville acknowledged the efforts of Jason Miyares, Jones’ Republican opponent, stating that Miyares ran “a pretty good campaign.” He also noted the defeat of Carrie Coyner, the Republican legislator who released Jones’ incendiary text messages, as “the most interesting piece of news of this cycle.” Coyner lost her reelection bid in the House of Delegates on the same night that Jones secured his position.
Jones garnered approximately 52.7% of the statewide vote against Miyares’ 46.9%, according to NBC News, with over 96% of the expected votes counted by Wednesday afternoon. Pre-election polling had indicated a competitive race, further underscoring the significance of Jones’ win.
Despite the backlash from the leaked messages, prominent Democrats, including Virginia Senator Tim Kaine and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, continued to support Jones, choosing not to call for his withdrawal from the race. This reflects a broader trend within the Democratic Party to rally around candidates who can secure victories, even amid controversy.
The Democratic Party achieved a notable success in Virginia, flipping the governorship and lieutenant governorship, while also gaining at least ten seats in the House of Delegates during the same election cycle. As the party looks ahead, Carville’s comments may serve as a reminder of the current political climate and the lengths to which candidates may go to ensure electoral success.
