Indiana Attorney General Urges National Guard Deployment After Violence

Indiana’s Attorney General, Todd Rokita, has formally requested that President Donald Trump deploy National Guard troops to Indianapolis following a violent weekend in the city. This request emerges in response to a series of shootings that left at least ten individuals injured, including two teenagers, one of whom succumbed to their injuries.

The violence occurred over the weekend, with notable incidents including a shooting inside a downtown bar early Sunday morning where three people were shot. Additionally, another victim was shot on the sidewalk near the intersection of Meridian and Georgia streets. Rokita expressed his concerns on X, emphasizing the need for immediate action.

Calls for Action Amid Rising Violence

In his post, Rokita stated, “Another violent weekend in our state’s capital. It’s shameful that this is a regular occurrence and even more shameful that the leadership here refuses to do anything about it.” He continued by asserting that Hoosiers deserve to feel safe and secure, criticizing the ongoing crisis and calling for the restoration of law and order. “President Trump should absolutely add Indianapolis to his list of cities to send the National Guard to. It would be welcomed to get this violence under control,” he concluded.

Rokita’s comments follow a summer marked by heightened violence in Indianapolis. In mid-July, the Indiana State Police provided additional support to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) during the WNBA All-Star weekend after a particularly violent Fourth of July weekend. That weekend saw multiple shootings, including the deaths of two teenagers.

Mayor’s Response and Community Concerns

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett responded to Rokita’s call for national intervention by stating that armed troops would not enhance the safety of the city. In a statement, he emphasized the importance of community engagement in improving public safety. “Improving public safety requires listening to communities and building trust,” Hogsett remarked.

He highlighted pressing issues facing the city, including over 100,000 residents experiencing food insecurity and rising costs of essential goods and services. Hogsett asserted that the focus should be on developing gun laws that restrict access for young individuals and enhancing police authority to manage problematic bars.

“The City of Indianapolis remains focused on our gun violence reduction strategy, which has driven significant reductions in criminal homicides and non-fatal shootings in our community since 2022,” he added.

A spokesperson for the Indiana National Guard indicated that they were unaware of any plans to send troops to Indianapolis and referred inquiries back to the governor’s office.

As discussions continue regarding the best approach to tackle the escalating violence, the divide between state officials and local leadership reflects deeper concerns about public safety and community trust in law enforcement.
