iRi NYC and New Year Market Launch Upcycled Key Charms for Seniors
iRi NYC has partnered with New Year Market, a Korea-based social impact brand, to launch a collection of upcycled key charms designed by seniors. This collaboration, which will debut on Wednesday, marks an extension of iRi NYC’s commitment to sustainability and community engagement by offering unique handmade products that also serve as decorative shoe charms.
Empowering Seniors Through Design
The initiative not only highlights the creativity of senior citizens but also provides them with meaningful employment. New Year Market is dedicated to creating safe job opportunities for seniors, particularly those who live alone or rely on collecting recyclables for support. By engaging these individuals as designers, the brand fosters an environment where their ideas can flourish, with younger team members collaborating to bring these concepts to life.
iRi NYC continues its mission of upcycling through this collaboration, which aligns with its values of social and environmental responsibility. The key charms, priced between $20 and $30, are handcrafted using upcycled materials, including scraps from sock and shoe production. This approach not only reduces waste but also supports local economies by utilizing materials that would otherwise be discarded.
A Shift Towards Sustainability
This year’s project follows last year’s successful initiative with the woman-owned upcycling brand Cueclyp, which produced cup coasters from surplus neoprene fabric. The current focus on footwear accessories reflects a broader trend towards environmentally friendly production practices. Since its inception in 2017, iRi NYC has progressively shifted towards sustainable materials, a change that became easier after relocating production to Korea, where sustainable resources are more readily available.
“When we first launched, none of our products had anything to do with sustainable materials. But thankfully, once we moved our production to Korea, I was shocked that they have a lot of availability with sustainable footwear materials,” said a representative from iRi NYC.
The collaboration with New Year Market not only provides seniors with a creative outlet but also contributes to their financial independence. As the project evolves, both organizations remain focused on their shared goal of enabling people of all ages to express themselves freely through unique, sustainable products.
As the market for sustainable fashion continues to grow, collaborations like this one serve as a reminder of the positive impact that socially conscious brands can have on their communities. The key charms designed by seniors are not just products; they embody stories of creativity, resilience, and the importance of supporting one another.
The launch event will take place in the coming days, with both brands eager to showcase their commitment to sustainability and community empowerment. With the holiday season approaching, these key charms could make for thoughtful gifts that support a greater cause.
