Chicago Blackhawks Captain Nick Foligno Takes Leave for Family Emergency
Chicago Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno will be stepping away from the team as his daughter undergoes heart surgery. The team confirmed on March 12, 2024, that Foligno’s absence is necessary for family reasons related to his daughter’s ongoing health issues. The Blackhawks described this as a “brief leave of absence” while noting that neither Foligno nor the organization would provide additional comments at this time.
Milana Foligno, who recently celebrated her 12th birthday, has been living with congenital heart disease since birth. She initially underwent surgery when she was just three weeks old. In a heartfelt statement to CBC, Foligno recounted a vivid memory of following an ambulance to a hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He recalled the distressing experience of being in the front seat with his wife, Janelle, while their daughter was in the ambulance, leaving an empty car seat behind.
Community Advocacy
In February, Foligno and his wife became national ambassadors for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, using their platform to raise awareness about heart health. Their personal experience has driven them to advocate for others facing similar challenges, highlighting the importance of support and understanding for families dealing with medical issues.
The Blackhawks will miss their captain for an undetermined period, starting with their game against the St. Louis Blues on March 13, 2024. Foligno, who has contributed two assists in four games this season, will be focused on his family’s needs during this time.
As the team prepares to face the Blues, the situation underscores the balance between professional commitments and family obligations. The Blackhawks organization has expressed its full support for Foligno as he prioritizes his daughter’s health.
