North Coast Growers’ Association Launches $10,000 Community Campaign
The North Coast Growers’ Association (NCGA) has initiated its “Rooted in Resilience: Community Giving Campaign,” aiming to raise $10,000 by December 31, 2023. This campaign encourages community members and local businesses to invest in the future of Humboldt County’s local food system. The funds raised will support various programs intended to nourish families, sustain local farmers, and enhance community resilience amid increasing challenges.
For over 45 years, NCGA has successfully operated certified farmers markets, which serve as vital shopping venues and community gathering spaces. These markets strengthen local connections, support growers, and bolster the regional food economy. According to an NCGA press release, “This year has brought significant strain to communities throughout Humboldt County. Rising costs, unstable funding, and disruptions in food access programs have left many families navigating uncertainty.”
The organization stepped in to assist families reliant on farmers markets when federal SNAP and CalFresh benefits faced interruptions earlier in the year. As climate-related events increasingly impact rural areas, the necessity for reliable food infrastructure has become evident.
Funding Objectives and Community Support
The funds from the “Rooted in Resilience” campaign will directly support essential training and business development for beginning farmers. This initiative aims to ensure that agricultural land remains productive and that a new generation of growers can thrive in Humboldt County. Additionally, the funding will facilitate the development of vital food infrastructure in rural communities, which can serve as access points during emergencies and natural disasters.
The campaign also aims to enhance the distribution of fresh food to schools, tribes, rural communities, and food banks through NCGA’s Harvest Hub. “Community support through participation, cooperation, donations, and sponsorships ensures that this work can continue to grow and serve those who need it most,” the press release stated.
Local businesses are invited to join the campaign by offering matching donations. Such contributions not only encourage broader community participation but also amplify the impact of each donation. Businesses interested in collaborating are encouraged to contact NCGA for additional details.
Community Commitment and Donation Options
Portia Bramble, Executive Director of NCGA, emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “We rely on community support, through your commitment to shopping locally at our farmers markets and your donations, to keep our local food system and community strong. Every contribution helps sustain and support the programs that ensure healthy food reaches all people across Humboldt County.”
Tax-deductible donations can be made online at the NCGA website or by mailing a check to the North Coast Growers Association, P.O. Box 4232, Arcata, CA, 95518. For more information about NCGA’s programs and initiatives, individuals can visit www.northcoastgrowersassociation.org.
Through this campaign, NCGA aims not only to secure funding but also to reinforce the community’s commitment to supporting local agriculture and ensuring food access for all residents of Humboldt County.
