New Musical ‘Dypsy!’ Inspired by Gypsy Rose Blanchard Set for 2026
A new musical titled Dypsy! is set to debut in London’s West End in 2026, offering a satirical take on the sensational true crime saga of Gypsy Rose Blanchard. Created by Parkinson Phillips Productions, the show has been in development since 2024, aiming to explore society’s obsession with true crime through high-energy comedy and original music.
The musical, with lyrics by Samuel Parkinson-Philips and music composed by Rachel Blaquière, draws inspiration from the infamous case involving Blanchard and her mother, Claudine ‘Dee Dee’ Blanchard. In 2016, Gypsy Rose, then 17, and her boyfriend, Nicolas Godejohn, conspired to murder Dee Dee, who had subjected her daughter to years of medical abuse under the guise of Munchausen syndrome by proxy. This condition is defined by the Cleveland Clinic as a mental health issue where a caregiver fabricates or induces illness in someone under their care.
The musical promises to blend parody with poignant commentary, tackling serious themes such as psychological manipulation and medical abuse. In its description, Dypsy! is characterized as a biting satire that seeks to differentiate between entertainment and tragedy, reflecting on the societal fascination with true crime narratives.
Writer and producer Parkinson-Philips stated, “The story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard continues to spark global conversation, raising crucial issues around psychological manipulation and abuse.” He added that while the show employs satire and theatrical absurdity, it aims to foster understanding about often-overlooked topics.
Gypsy Rose’s life has been the subject of various media portrayals, including the 2017 documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest and the 2019 Hulu series The Act, where she was portrayed by actress Joey King. Additionally, a crime drama titled Love You to Death, which aired on Lifetime in 2019, also drew from her experiences, featuring Marcia Gay Harden and Emily Skeggs.
“By blending musical theatre with true crime,” Parkinson-Philips noted, “we’re creating something genuinely unique — and that’s incredibly exciting.”
The production aims to follow in the footsteps of successful parody shows like Titanique and Oh, Mary!, utilizing campy exaggeration and bold storytelling to reinterpret Gypsy Rose’s harrowing tale.
Since her release from prison, Gypsy Rose, now 34 years old, has made significant life changes, including divorcing her husband, Ryan Scott Anderson. She became a mother last year, welcoming a daughter named Aurora with her boyfriend, Ken Urker.
As anticipation builds for the premiere of Dypsy!, the intersection of music, comedy, and serious social commentary promises to engage audiences in a meaningful way. The production aims for a balance where laughter and reflection coexist, allowing for a deeper examination of the complexities surrounding the true crime phenomenon.
