Alabama Teams Claim State Titles in AL.com Flag Football Finals
The AL.com Flag Football polls have undergone significant changes following the state playoff finals, where teams battled fiercely for supremacy. In the Super 7 championships held at Birmingham’s Progressive Field, the top-ranked teams in both classes emerged victorious.
In Class 6A/7A, the No. 1 team, Central-Phenix City, solidified its dominance by defeating No. 2 Vestavia Hills with a decisive score of 46-7. This victory marked Central’s third consecutive state championship and capped off an impressive unbeaten season, concluding with a perfect record of 20-0. Central-Phenix City’s run included an astounding 57-game winning streak, which notably ended Vestavia’s own 27-game unbeaten streak this season.
Meanwhile, in Class 1A/5A, Moody triumphed over No. 2 Montgomery Catholic with a score of 27-18, capturing its first state title. This win was particularly sweet for Moody as it avenged its loss to Catholic in the 2024 state championship game, where they had fallen short 14-7. The Blue Devils completed their campaign with a record of 22-3, while Montgomery Catholic finished the season at 21-5.
The latest updates in the MaxPreps national rankings reflect these results, with Central-Phenix City moving up to second place and being ranked 27th by USA Today. Vestavia Hills ended the year ranked 28-2 and placed sixth in the USA Today poll. Moody also made an impact on the rankings, sitting at No. 21 in both MaxPreps and USA Today.
Significant Shifts in Rankings
The playoff results led to considerable movement in the rankings. In the large-school category, playoff semifinalist Smiths Station made a significant leap, entering the top ten at No. 3 after being unranked in the final regular-season poll. Homewood, which was eliminated by Vestavia Hills in the quarterfinals, managed to secure the tenth position in the final rankings. Out of the final top ten teams, seven reached at least the playoff quarterfinals.
In the small-school rankings, while the top two teams experienced major changes, no new teams entered the list. Seven quarterfinalists remain ranked in the top ten, maintaining a competitive landscape.
As flag football continues to gain popularity in Alabama, the Vestavia Hills Parks Department is also contributing to the sport’s growth by hosting a flag football clinic and high school showcase, aimed at fostering talent and interest in the game.
The excitement surrounding the 2025 flag football season and its impact on local communities signifies the sport’s bright future in Alabama. With strong performances and competitive spirit, teams are already looking ahead to next season, eager to claim their place in history.
