Steve Kerr Backs Jonathan Kuminga After Ejection in Warriors Game
During a preseason exhibition on October 4, 2023, between the Golden State Warriors and the Portland Trail Blazers, player Jonathan Kuminga was ejected for his heated confrontation with an official. The incident occurred late in the first half after Kuminga expressed frustration over a missed foul call.
Kuminga was involved in a drive to the basket when he felt he was unfairly treated, leading him to approach the referee and clap in his face—a gesture that resulted in an immediate ejection without any prior technical foul. Head Coach Steve Kerr quickly intervened to protest the decision, but his appeals went unanswered.
Kerr Supports Kuminga’s Passion
Replays of the play in question showed that Kuminga’s anger may have been justified. Both Kris Murray and Jerami Grant appeared to make contact with Kuminga, potentially warranting a foul call. Kerr later expressed his approval of Kuminga’s emotional response, stating, “I don’t mind the ejection at all. I kind of liked it, actually.” The coach emphasized that Kuminga’s passion during the game sends a positive signal about his commitment to the team.
“That’s the J.K. that can really help our team,” Kerr added, highlighting the player’s potential impact. Prior to his ejection, Kuminga had contributed seven points, six rebounds, and four assists, showcasing his versatility on the court.
Last season, Kuminga averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game, while shooting at a rate of 45 percent from the field. These statistics indicate his capacity to perform at a high level, although his role has been somewhat diminished with the recent addition of Jimmy Butler to the Warriors roster. As the team aims to strengthen its depth behind stars like Butler, Stephen Curry, and Draymond Green, Kuminga’s future remains uncertain.
Team Dynamics and Future Prospects
Kerr has previously emphasized the strong leadership within the Warriors locker room, noting that he has known Kuminga for four years and trusts his character. “He’s not the guy to come in and tear a team down … I’m not worried about anything,” Kerr reassured. This support from both the coach and teammates is crucial for Kuminga as he navigates his development in the NBA.
Reflecting on Kerr’s message after the game, Kuminga stated, “It means a lot. The game has slowed down so much. I’m seeing everything. I’m just playing at my own pace.” His comments underscore the importance of the team’s environment in fostering individual growth and success.
As the Warriors continue their preseason campaign, Kuminga’s performance and attitude will be closely monitored. His ability to channel his competitive spirit into constructive actions could significantly influence his role within the team as the regular season approaches.
