Willson Contreras Sparks Trade Talks as Cardinals Weigh Options
Rumors of a trade involving Willson Contreras are generating significant interest in the baseball community, particularly with the Boston Red Sox reportedly eyeing the St. Louis Cardinals catcher. This development comes after Contreras, who has expressed a desire to remain with the Cardinals, appears more open to a potential move given his versatility to play first base. The Cardinals’ management has indicated they are receptive to trades that make strategic sense, although Contreras holds a full no-trade clause.
Initially, as the offseason began, it seemed improbable that Contreras would be traded. Other veterans on the roster, such as Nolan Arenado, Brendan Donovan, and JoJo Romero, were considered more likely candidates for deals. Yet, the landscape has shifted somewhat, with reports suggesting Contreras has grown more amenable to the idea of a trade, despite his previous commitment to staying with the team.
During the recent winter meetings, Cardinals manager Oli Marmol spoke highly of Contreras, emphasizing his value to the organization. However, Marmol also acknowledged that if a compelling opportunity arose, it would be worth considering.
Red Sox Interest in Contreras Grows
On September 15, 2025, sources indicated that the Boston Red Sox have intensified their pursuit of Contreras. According to a report from MLB insider Chris Cotillo, the Red Sox are actively exploring options for top position players, and Contreras has emerged as a viable candidate. Cotillo noted, “A new name has surfaced for the Red Sox, who, according to a source, are pursuing Donovan’s teammate, Willson Contreras, in trade talks.”
Contreras, a three-time All-Star, played primarily as a first baseman last season rather than his usual catching role. His current contract includes two years remaining worth $41 million, along with a club option for 2028. While he possesses a no-trade clause, there are indications he may be willing to waive it for a suitable situation.
The Red Sox have already engaged in business with the Cardinals this offseason, having acquired pitcher Sonny Gray. Given the relationship between the two organizations, particularly with Red Sox president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom familiar with the Cardinals’ prospects, a trade could be advantageous for both sides. This familiarity may facilitate negotiations should Boston pursue a deal for Contreras.
As teams begin to finalize their rosters with the offseason heating up, the situation surrounding Contreras remains fluid. The Cardinals still have valuable assets available, and the prospect of moving Contreras could create new opportunities for the franchise.
With ongoing discussions regarding other potential trades, including those involving other veterans, the market for Contreras will be closely monitored in the coming weeks. The Cardinals will likely weigh the benefits of retaining a proven slugger against the potential return of fresh talent through a strategic trade.
