Beloved Family Man John S. Hartpence Passes Away at 77

John S. Hartpence, affectionately known as Jack, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2025, in Ocala, Florida. He was 77 years old. Born on March 19, 1948, Jack was the son of John and Mildred Hartpence. He graduated from Hudson Falls High School in New York and later earned his degree from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1970.

While at university, Jack met his future wife, Dorothy (Dot) Doyle, and the couple married later that same year. They welcomed two sons, John Hartpence and Geoffrey Hartpence, who brought immense joy to Jack’s life, along with his cherished grandchildren: Ben, Kiera, Lily, Emma, and Jack.

Jack’s career began at Aetna before he transitioned to a role as a Personal Account Representative at Travelers Insurance Company. He also served in the Army National Guard, a commitment that reflected his dedication and service to his country. Throughout his life, Jack was known for his kind nature and great sense of humor, earning him the reputation of a true gentleman among friends and family.

Family was the cornerstone of Jack’s existence. He delighted in playing sports with his sons in their backyard, a tradition he continued with his grandchildren. Whether it was intense basketball matches with Ben or cheering on Kiera at her volleyball games, Jack’s enthusiasm for family activities was apparent. He also enjoyed board games with Lily and Emma and shared playful moments with his namesake, Jack.

Jack had a deep connection to the outdoors, particularly through his childhood experiences on his grandfather’s farm in Jay, New York. He was an avid traveler who loved golf, fly fishing, and visiting national parks. His favorite destination was Yellowstone National Park, where he made lasting memories, especially during a visit two years prior with his sons.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and their sons, John (Laura) Hartpence and Geoffrey (Courtney) Hartpence. Jack’s legacy also includes his grandchildren and siblings: Mary Gordon, Jim Hartpence, Tim (Mary) Hartpence, and Sue (Jeff) Curren, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jack was predeceased by his parents and numerous aunts and uncles.

A celebration of Jack’s life will take place in his community at Summerglen in Ocala and in Hudson Falls during late spring. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Yellowstone Forever at PO Box 1857, Bozeman, MT 59771-1857 or via email at [email protected].
