Accused Oak Fire Arsonist Released with Ankle Monitor Today
UPDATE: The accused Oak Fire arsonist, 73-year-old Edward Wackerman, has been released from jail with an electronic ankle monitor as of last night, October 16, 2023, following a court order. This development, confirmed by the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office, raises significant concerns in a community still reeling from the devastating wildfire that destroyed 127 homes.
Wackerman was arrested on July 22, 2022, under allegations of igniting the Oak Fire, considered the most catastrophic event in Mariposa County history. He faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated arson, and has pleaded not guilty. His release comes after a court hearing where representatives from the California Department of Justice and Wackerman’s defense reached an agreement for his release.
During a live Facebook update on Monday evening, Sheriff Jeremy Briese assured the community that the sheriff’s office will maintain strict oversight of Wackerman. “The sheriff’s office will do everything we can to be of assistance. We hope things like this can be reversed,” Briese stated, emphasizing the need for legislative changes to address such cases.
The decision to release Wackerman has sparked outrage among community members who are concerned about safety and accountability. Sheriff Briese acknowledged the emotional toll the Oak Fire has had on residents, stating, “It’s not right.”
Wackerman is scheduled to return to court for a pre-trial hearing in January 2026, leaving many in the area anxious about the ongoing implications of this case. The sheriff’s office is committed to collaborating with probation officials to ensure effective monitoring of Wackerman during this period.
This developing story highlights the ongoing challenges faced by communities affected by wildfires and the complexities of the legal system in handling such cases. As the situation unfolds, residents are urged to stay informed and engaged.
