UPDATE: Residents in Clovis, California, are flocking to local shops this December 2, 2023, as part of Small Business Saturday. The festive atmosphere, complete with Christmas-themed carriage rides, has transformed Old Town Clovis into a bustling holiday marketplace.

Shoppers are taking to the streets in droves, eager to find unique holiday gifts and support local businesses. “Everyone’s antique shopping right here in Clovis, which is great. The weather is fantastic, and the venues are amazing,” shared shopper Heather Martinez as she showcased her one-of-a-kind find.

Martinez, who has lived in the area her entire life, emphasized the importance of supporting small businesses. “Of course I’m going to support small businesses; that’s how it’s supposed to be,” she said, highlighting the community spirit that drives local shopping.

Local merchants are also experiencing a significant boost in sales. Tom Frost, owner of Frost Oak Creek Creations, noted that the holiday season can account for nearly a third of annual business. “Like they say, Black Friday kickstarts it all. It just really starts picking up dramatically and stays busy right through Christmas,” he explained.

In addition to Clovis, central Fresno is witnessing a similar trend at Manchester Mall, where local entrepreneurs are urging consumers to consider the impact of their purchases. “When you shop at a big box store, you’re just another number. But buying from a small business could mean you’re helping to pay for someone’s meal,” remarked Lani, owner of Shake & Sip Lemonade Stand.

While Small Business Saturday is a designated day for supporting local retailers, shop owners express gratitude for the community’s ongoing patronage throughout the year. The collective effort to shop small not only helps sustain local economies but also fosters a sense of unity and belonging among residents.

With the holiday shopping season officially underway, many are encouraged to explore their local markets. As more shoppers join the movement to support small businesses, the urgency to participate is palpable.
