Major Renovations Complete at MSP’s Terminal 1 Ahead of Holidays
UPDATE: The largest interior renovation of Terminal 1 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) has just been completed, transforming the space into a modern, brighter hub just in time for holiday travelers. The $242 million renovation project, a collaboration between the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) and Delta Air Lines, focused on enhancing the passenger experience across six concourses and 75 Delta gate hold rooms.
The renovations, which began in the fall of 2023, have dramatically updated the terminal’s aesthetics and functionality. “In a matter of two years, we have witnessed a major transformation of the post-security areas of Terminal 1 that elevates the passenger experience,” stated Brian Ryks, CEO of the MAC. Ryks emphasized that these improvements reflect a commitment to providing award-winning customer service at MSP.
Key upgrades include new terrazzo or carpet flooring, modern wall finishes, and efficient LED lighting fixtures. Delta’s gate areas received a complete overhaul, featuring new seating, carpeting, counters, and signage. Notably, the addition of “dynamic gate signs” will allow travelers to access flight and destination information quickly from farther down the concourse.
This renovation comes as part of a larger initiative known as the Airport Modernization Program, which also includes enhancements to pre-security areas like checkpoints and baggage claims. This segment of the program was completed this fall, with the MAC investing $182.5 million and Delta contributing $60 million.
As Delta maintains a 70% passenger market share at MSP, these upgrades are not just cosmetic—they are designed to significantly enhance the overall travel experience for millions of passengers. With holiday travel set to surge, the new renovations promise to make navigating the airport more efficient and pleasant.
Travelers and airport staff alike can expect a more unified and welcoming environment as they move through Terminal 1. The upgrades are part of a concerted effort to elevate MSP’s status as a premier travel destination, aligning with Delta’s status as one of the airline’s largest hubs.
As holiday travel ramps up, this timely renovation is expected to have a positive impact on passenger flow and satisfaction. Authorities and airline officials are optimistic that the changes will lead to smoother operations and an overall enhanced experience for travelers this season.
Stay tuned for further updates as MSP continues to evolve and improve to meet the demands of modern travel.
