Max Muncy Sets Dodgers Postseason Record with 14th HR
UPDATE: In a stunning display of power, Max Muncy smashed his 14th career postseason home run during Game 2 of the National League Championship Series against the Milwaukee Brewers on October 17, 2023. This remarkable feat not only secured a 5-1 victory for the Los Angeles Dodgers but also set a new franchise record for the most home runs in postseason history.
The historic 412-foot blast over the center-field wall in the sixth inning broke the previous record held by Dodgers legends Justin Turner and Corey Seager. With this win, the Dodgers now lead the best-of-seven series 2-0.
“It means a lot to me,” Muncy said after the game, reflecting on the significance of the achievement. “The Dodgers are a franchise that have been around for a very, very long time. A lot of very successful players have played in this organization. And to be able to break that record is kind of huge for me.”
Muncy’s solo shot off Brewers starter Freddy Peralta extended the Dodgers’ lead to 3-1 and underscored his status as one of the most impactful players in October baseball. “The biggest thing I would say is it speaks to the fact that I’ve had a chance to play in so many postseason games,” Muncy continued. “You know you’ll have a chance in October to play meaningful baseball games. That’s always been the most important thing to me.”
This game marked Muncy’s 70th postseason appearance with the Dodgers, a remarkable achievement when compared to Turner’s 86 games from 2014-2022 and Seager’s 61 from 2015-2021.
In Game 1 of the NLCS, Muncy narrowly missed breaking the record, nearly hitting a grand slam that turned into an unusual double play instead. His initial drive to center field was caught by Brewers outfielder Sal Frelick, who lost the ball after a leaping attempt, resulting in a rare 8-6-2 double play.
Reflecting on that close call, Muncy admitted, “I definitely thought he got it. That back wall is so close to the center-field wall. I didn’t see the ball bounce at all. I thought he came down with it again, and I was about to be very, very frustrated.” He added that the moment of realization came when he saw Frelick sitting on the ground after the catch attempt.
Alongside his home run record, Muncy also holds the Dodgers franchise record with 60 career postseason walks, further emphasizing his importance in clutch situations.
As the Dodgers prepare for Game 3, all eyes will be on Muncy and their quest for a World Series title. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see if Muncy can continue his record-setting pace and lead the Dodgers further into the postseason. Stay tuned for more updates as the NLCS unfolds!
