Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Safe After Oklahoma City Home Break-In
URGENT UPDATE: Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander confirmed that he and his family are safe following a shocking break-in at their home in Oklahoma City last week. This incident occurred while the NBA’s reigning MVP was on the court during a game against the Washington Wizards on Thursday, October 26, 2023.
In a post-game interview after the Thunder’s victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday, Gilgeous-Alexander expressed relief, stating, “Long story short, everybody’s safe, and that’s all that really matters in the whole thing.” He continued, “Everything else will come and go, but my loved ones are safe, so I’m OK. I’m happy.”
Police in Nichols Hills responded to the burglary report around 7:45 p.m. on Thursday. While local news crews captured the police presence at the scene, authorities revealed that the suspects fled before officers arrived. A statement from police confirmed, “While no arrests have been made, there is no reason to believe the public is in any danger.”
Details about whether anyone was home during the break-in or if any items were stolen have not been released. The Nichols Hills Police Chief, Steven Cox, has not responded to requests for further information over the weekend.
This alarming break-in adds to a troubling trend of home burglaries targeting high-profile athletes across the United States. Recent cases have involved stars like NFL players Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Joe Burrow, as well as NBA player Luka Doncic and NHL player Evgeni Malkin. Thieves are reportedly taking advantage of game days, knowing players will be away from home, often breaking in through rear windows.
Authorities have warned that these burglaries are increasing in frequency, particularly during games, creating concern for both athletes and their families. Fans and community members are rallying around Gilgeous-Alexander and his family, expressing their support on social media.
As the investigation into this incident continues, residents in the area are urged to remain vigilant. Local law enforcement will increase patrols in neighborhoods known for high-profile residents in light of recent events.
