Urgent: Brown University Shooting Leaves 2 Dead, Multiple Injured
BREAKING: A tragic shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, has left two people dead and eight others critically injured as emergency responders remain on high alert. The incident unfolded earlier today, with police confirming they have no suspects in custody as of 7 p.m. ET.
Governor Dan McKee described the situation as “the unthinkable,” while Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed the fatalities and the condition of the injured. This event has sparked widespread fear and concern across the university community.
Authorities responded swiftly after receiving reports of gunfire at 4:22 p.m.. An initial alert was sent to students, advising them to “lock doors, silence phones, and stay hidden until further notice.” Just under an hour later, at 5:11 p.m., the university updated its guidance, urging students to shelter in place.
According to Tim O’Hara, deputy chief of Providence police, the suspect is described as a male dressed in black. Police have focused their search on the Barus & Holley Engineering building, identified as the site of the initial shooting reports. As of now, the gunman remains unidentified and on the loose.
“We are very sorry to share that we have confirmed reports of two deceased victims from the active shooting situation,” Brown University stated in a press update. “There are eight additional victims in critical, but stable condition at the hospital. There remains a shelter in place order.”
The FBI has confirmed it is assisting local law enforcement with the investigation, stating, “We are providing our resources to support our law enforcement partners in Rhode Island.” Despite early reports suggesting a suspect was in custody, Brown University Police later clarified that this information was incorrect.
Brown University officials have urged anyone who was in the vicinity of the Barus & Holley building during the incident to contact police. They emphasized the importance of following law enforcement directions and avoiding the area as the situation develops.
In the wake of this tragedy, officials are working diligently to identify the victims and provide support to the affected families. As the community grapples with this shocking act of violence, the university is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its students and staff.
