Minneapolis Shelter Extends Hours Amid Severe Cold This Weekend
As temperatures plummet across the region, the Catholic Charities Higher Ground Minneapolis shelter has extended its hours to provide warmth and safety for those in need. The shelter, located at 165 Glenwood Avenue, will remain open during the day from February 10 until 10 a.m. on February 12, allowing vulnerable individuals to seek refuge from the frigid weather.
Typically, the shelter operates from 4 p.m. to 10 a.m. each day. However, with dangerously low wind chill values forecasted, officials decided to keep the doors open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as well. A spokesperson noted that this decision is crucial given the severe conditions expected this weekend.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings about the bitter cold affecting the Twin Cities. According to their updates, wind chill values may drop to between -15 and -30 degrees Fahrenheit over the weekend, with potential lows reaching as much as -35 degrees. The NWS cautioned that these conditions can lead to frostbite in as little as ten minutes for exposed skin, underscoring the importance of accessible shelter.
During the extended hours, shelter staff will provide hot meals, showers, and essential cold-weather items. This initiative aims to ensure that the most vulnerable populations in Minneapolis have a safe place to stay during the extreme cold.
As the community grapples with the harsh winter conditions, additional reports have highlighted slippery road conditions throughout the metro area. Local authorities have urged residents to exercise caution while traveling.
Shelters like the Higher Ground Minneapolis play a vital role in providing support during extreme weather, reflecting a broader commitment to community welfare in times of crisis.
