V Foundation’s Gala Raises Record $3.1 Million for Cancer Research
UPDATE: The V Foundation for Cancer Research has just shattered fundraising records, raising an astounding $3.1 million during its 10th annual “Boo-Yah” gala in New York City on October 18, 2023. This remarkable event honors the legacy of former ESPN anchor Stuart Scott, who inspired many during his courageous battle with cancer.
The gala coincided with the debut of a new documentary titled “Boo-Yah: A Portrait of Stuart Scott” on ESPN’s acclaimed “30 for 30” series. This film chronicles Scott’s life, showcasing his fight against cancer and his lasting impact on sports journalism. Director Andre Gaines remarked,
“He was forced to fight it and in such a public way…to do it with that level of class and grace and to be an inspiration for so many other folks.”
As the night unfolded, ESPN Chairman James Pitaro expressed the organization’s deep commitment to the V Foundation, stating,
“The V Foundation is a huge part of who we are at ESPN… our employees take so much pride in our ability to contribute.”
Since its inception, the V Foundation has raised over $400 million for cancer research, with every dollar going directly to funding crucial scientific studies.
The evening was not only a celebration of fundraising but also a heartfelt tribute to Stuart Scott’s enduring spirit. His family, including sister Susan Scott and mother Jackie Scott, participated in the dual celebration of the film and gala. Randy Moss, Pro Football Hall of Famer and cancer survivor, received the inaugural Stuart Scott Impact Award, highlighting the barriers Scott broke for people of color in media. Moss expressed gratitude, saying,
“I’m able to be myself on national television because Stuart Scott broke all the barriers.”
