UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown in Torrance, the Rolling Hills Prep girls basketball team triumphed over Bishop Montgomery with a hard-fought 47-37 victory on December 5, 2023. This nonleague win underscores RHP’s resilience and depth, following their recent success in the CIF State Southern California Regionals.

Both teams faced shooting challenges, but RHP’s experience shone through. The Huskies surged ahead in the fourth quarter, pulling away decisively after a tight contest, illustrating the importance of teamwork and tenacity. RHP now stands at 5-2, marking their fourth win in five games.

Leading the charge for RHP was guard Leah Sasaki, who scored a game-high 13 points. Her teammates, Brooklyn Hall and Mia Fernandez, contributed significantly with 12 points each, while Regan Enright added 10 points. This balanced scoring was crucial in overcoming Bishop Montgomery’s defensive efforts.

“The biggest thing I always tell the girls is that we’re a family and we take care of each other,” said Huskies coach Moniquee Alexander. “They did a really good job of that today.”

Bishop Montgomery, struggling without two key starters, fought hard but eventually fell short. They trailed by ten points late in the third quarter, and despite a brief scoring surge, they missed an astounding 13 consecutive shots, which proved detrimental.

Coach Rheina Ale expressed frustration over her team’s defensive lapses, stating, “I haven’t seen them play that bad defensively. We couldn’t keep them outside of the paint.” The Knights, now 3-7, are still adapting as they await the return of top player Sophia Dignadice, currently with the Philippines national team, and Denvur Ramirez, a transfer from Los Alamitos.

RHP maintained a narrow lead throughout the game, but a pivotal 3-pointer from Enright late in the third quarter sparked a significant scoring run. This was emblematic of her resilience, as she recovered from a slow start to help her team secure the win. “Her life story is just amazing,” Alexander remarked, highlighting Enright’s determination.

The Knights have a tough road ahead as they navigate the season with a roster that includes several inexperienced players. Bishop Montgomery will need to quickly adapt to these new dynamics to improve their performance in upcoming games.

The Huskies will look to build on this momentum as they prepare for their next challenge, while the Knights aim to regroup and find their rhythm. Fans and analysts will be watching closely to see how both teams evolve in the coming weeks.
