Sharks Face Maple Leafs with Key Player Returns
The San Jose Sharks are set to face the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday at Scotiabank Arena, with several notable player updates. Goalie Alex Nedeljkovic will start his third consecutive game, while defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin returns to the lineup after a ten-day absence. This matchup is critical for the Sharks, who are looking to break a troubling trend of four losses in five games.
Nedeljkovic stepped in as the starting goalie against the Philadelphia Flyers on December 5, 2023, when Yaroslav Askarov was unable to play due to illness. In that game, Nedeljkovic recorded 26 saves out of 29 shots but ultimately faced a 4-1 defeat. Askarov has since traveled from Philadelphia to Toronto and will back up Nedeljkovic, who holds a record of 4-6-2 this season with a save percentage of .899. Askarov may start in the Sharks’ upcoming game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on December 10, 2023, marking the end of their challenging five-game road trip.
Mukhamadullin has not participated in a game since December 1, 2023, when the Sharks defeated the Utah Mammoth 6-3. He was close to returning on December 5, but Timothy Liljegren played instead, logging 18:30 of ice time. During Wednesday’s practice, Mukhamadullin was paired with Mario Ferraro. This season, he has contributed one goal and four assists over 14 games, averaging 16:29 in ice time primarily in a second or third defense pair role.
Thrun Debuts for the Maple Leafs
Former Sharks defenseman Henry Thrun is making his debut with the Maple Leafs on Thursday. When asked if he felt the need to prove himself against his old team, Thrun responded, “I mean, you always do right. It’s a league where you’re trying to prove yourself every night. I’m more just worried about myself and playing my game.”
Thrun was traded to the Maple Leafs in July 2023 for forward Ryan Reaves. While Reaves has integrated well into the Sharks’ lineup, Thrun faced challenges early in the season. He was placed on waivers in October and subsequently assigned to the Toronto Marlies of the AHL, where he recorded nine points in 19 games. Thrun was recalled on December 6, 2023, due to injuries affecting defensemen Brandon Carlo, Chris Tanev, and Dakota Mermis.
“It’s super exciting, obviously,” Thrun remarked about his return to the NHL. “Toronto is the biggest hockey market in the world, so to be able to get a chance to represent the NHL team here is pretty special.”
Reaves Reflects on Departure from Toronto
Ryan Reaves addressed the media on December 7, 2023, reflecting on his departure from the Maple Leafs earlier this season. “They basically said that I couldn’t play in this league anymore,” Reaves stated. “And I’m back.” Currently in the second year of a three-year, $4.05 million contract, Reaves was a healthy scratch for 15 of the first 42 games last season, ultimately playing in only 35 of 62 games before being placed on waivers in March.
Reaves noted that he had hoped for more transparency during his time with the Leafs. “I think throughout the year, not just that situation, I think there were other situations that could have been handled differently,” he said. “At the time, I had been in the league for 15 years, and just a little honesty and communication would have been nice.”
Despite the challenges, Reaves expressed satisfaction with his current situation in San Jose, stating, “I ended up in a great organization in San Jose, and I’m having a great time playing there.” He added that while facing former teammates is always special, he has grown accustomed to playing against friends throughout his career.
Leafs coach Craig Berube acknowledged Reaves’ contributions to the game, saying, “I’ve known Reavo for a long time. I think Reavo’s had a great career, in terms of what he does and his role as a player.”
As the Sharks and Maple Leafs prepare for their matchup, all eyes will be on the ice as both teams look to secure a vital victory.
