Bulgarian Man Dies in ICE Custody, Calls for Urgent Investigation
UPDATE: A shocking incident has unfolded as a Bulgarian man, Nenko Gantchev, aged 56, has died in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the North Lake Correctional Facility in Baldwin, MI. Gantchev was arrested during a recent immigration enforcement operation and passed away on December 16, 2023, just hours after his wife expected a call from him.
Authorities report that Gantchev’s death is “suspected to be from natural causes,” but the official cause remains under investigation. His family, however, is raising serious concerns regarding his deteriorating health prior to his death. “They treated him like an animal,” said Gantchev’s wife, a U.S. citizen who wishes to remain anonymous due to fear of retaliation.
Congresswoman Delia Ramirez is calling for an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding Gantchev’s death, specifically regarding allegations that he requested medical assistance multiple times without receiving timely care. “We are aware of at least 30 deaths at ICE detention centers this year, making 2023 the deadliest year for immigrants in ICE custody,” Ramirez stated.
Gantchev’s wife explained that he had been in custody since September 23, 2023, when he was arrested while attending a green card interview at the USCIS office in Chicago. His arrest was flagged by a federal judge as possibly violating the Castañon Nava consent decree, but his release on bond was subsequently blocked. Facing the choice of voluntary removal to Bulgaria or continued detention, Gantchev opted to remain in hopes of eventual release.
His wife recalled their last night together, stating, “I told him, ‘You have to make the decision, but please don’t leave me alone here.'” Tragically, the day of Gantchev’s death coincided with their eight-year wedding anniversary.
Gantchev had lived in the U.S. for over 30 years, running a trucking company and contributing to the community. Friends describe him as a kind, hardworking individual who showed resilience despite the challenges he faced in detention. “He was just a wonderful human being,” said a close friend who did not wish to be named.
Reports indicate that Gantchev suffered from type 2 diabetes and that the facility’s food provisions were inadequate for his medical needs. His wife said he had communicated to her about his declining health, expressing concerns about insufficient dietary accommodations. “There was no special diet,” a friend confirmed.
ICE stated that Gantchev was found unresponsive during routine checks, and medical staff initiated CPR before emergency services arrived. However, his family has received scant information about the cause of death or the circumstances leading up to it.
As calls for transparency intensify, advocates are emphasizing the need for systemic change. Christine Sauvé from the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center fears that Gantchev’s death exemplifies a troubling pattern within ICE’s detention practices. “This is the 29th death in ICE custody since the Trump administration began, highlighting the inhumane conditions detainees face,” she remarked.
Gantchev’s family and friends are desperate for answers. They are demanding accountability from ICE and improved conditions for detainees. “If enough attention is called to what is happening here, maybe they can save someone else’s life,” said a close friend.
As the investigation unfolds, Gantchev’s story has resonated widely, shedding light on the urgent need for reforms within the immigration detention system. His wife hopes to raise awareness to prevent similar tragedies in the future. “That’s why I’m talking to you,” she said, determined to honor her husband’s legacy and fight for justice.
The investigation into Gantchev’s death is ongoing, and community leaders are urging anyone with information to come forward. As developments continue, the focus remains on the need for humane treatment of individuals in immigration custody.
