Graduates of the University of North Dakota (UND) were encouraged to engage in self-reflection during their commencement ceremonies on December 19, 2023. Jill Cholewa, a distinguished alumna and retired business owner, posed a thought-provoking question: “If you were an employer, would you hire yourself?” This inquiry aimed to inspire graduates to evaluate their readiness for the professional world.

Cholewa, who has a long-standing connection with UND, delivered her message at three ceremonies held at Chester Fritz Auditorium. The morning session was dedicated to graduate students, while two undergraduate ceremonies took place in the afternoon. A total of 545 undergraduates and 311 graduate students participated, filling the auditorium with applause and celebration.

In his opening remarks, President Andrew Armacost commended the graduates for their perseverance in adverse weather conditions. “Today is a day of celebration… we’re so glad that you would be here,” he said, emphasizing the significance of the day for the students.

Cholewa, a graduate of 1977 and 1979, is a recipient of the Sioux Award for Distinguished Achievement and Leadership. Originally from Hillsboro, North Dakota, she and her husband founded a successful lumber business in California in 1987. They have supported UND through various scholarships and established endowments in the Nistler College of Business and Public Administration, the College of Education and Human Development, and the university’s volleyball program, in which Cholewa was an athlete.

During her speeches, Cholewa provided graduates with three distinct lists. The first included four questions designed to prompt self-assessment, such as, “Would you hire you based on your curiosity?” and “Would you hire you based on your ability to work with others?” These questions aimed to foster a deeper understanding of personal strengths and weaknesses.

She also referenced a list of eight principles for success attributed to actor Denzel Washington, which include hard work, patience, sacrifice, consistency, discipline, self-confidence, a positive attitude, and focus. Cholewa emphasized the importance of these traits in achieving professional and personal goals.

In addition to these insights, Cholewa shared three essential qualities she believes are crucial for success: the willingness to listen, the courage to be vulnerable, and a sense of servitude. She urged graduates to embrace active listening and openness to new ideas, asserting that effective leaders create environments where team members feel comfortable sharing their perspectives.

“The greatest leaders are those who see their roles as one of service to others,” Cholewa stated, underscoring the importance of humility in leadership. She encouraged graduates to recognize that the true value of their degrees lies in how they use their knowledge and skills to enhance the lives of their colleagues, communities, and the world.

Cholewa concluded her address by reminding students of their growth over the past four years. She urged them to trust in their abilities as they embark on their new journeys. “Questioning your worth is a compass… guiding you toward growth, integrity, and excellence,” she said, inspiring graduates to continue striving for success.

The celebration at UND marked not only the conclusion of academic journeys but also the beginning of new opportunities for the graduates, who are now poised to enter a world that seeks innovative and purpose-driven leaders.
