Southwest Airlines to Create 2,000 Jobs in Austin Under New Deal
Southwest Airlines has entered into a significant agreement with the City of Austin to create over 2,000 jobs for local residents. The deal, which received approval from the Austin City Council on March 14, 2024, provides the airline with an incentive of $2,750 for each new Austin-based hire over the next five years. In return, Southwest plans to offer high-paying positions with an average salary of $180,000 and contribute to local workforce initiatives, including the newly established Austin Infrastructure Academy.
During a press conference on March 15, Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Austin Mayor Kirk Watson highlighted the expected positive impact of this partnership on the city’s economy. The agreement is anticipated to bolster Southwest’s operations at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, where the airline already accounts for more than 40 percent of all passenger traffic.
The deal is projected to generate nearly $20 million in local tax revenue over the five-year period, with Southwest potentially receiving up to $5.5 million through the incentive program. Mayor Watson emphasized the multifaceted benefits of the agreement, stating, “We’re building lives and careers at the same time we’re building tarmacs and terminals.” He further remarked, “This deal creates thousands of good-paying jobs, improves the passenger experience, and ensures the benefits flow directly to Austin workers, families, and tourists.”
The new jobs created by Southwest are expected not only to enhance employment opportunities in Austin but also to improve the overall experience at the airport. This initiative is part of a broader effort to solidify Austin’s reputation as a hub for business and innovation.
In summary, the collaboration between Southwest Airlines and the City of Austin marks a pivotal step in fostering economic growth while also enhancing the community’s workforce capabilities. The agreement reflects the airline’s commitment to investing in the local economy, ensuring that the benefits of this partnership extend beyond the company to positively impact the citizens of Austin.
