Andy Dick Blames Fentanyl for Apparent Overdose in Hollywood
Comedian Andy Dick has attributed his recent medical emergency to fentanyl after a video surfaced showing him unresponsive on steps in Hollywood. The incident, which occurred on March 12, 2024, prompted concern as friends attempted to revive him before first responders arrived.
Details of the Incident
Following the release of the video, Dick stated he is “110 percent” fine. In an interview with the New York Post, he asserted that fentanyl was responsible for his overdose. “It has to be [fentanyl],” he explained, noting that paramedics informed his friends it was the likely cause of his condition. “That’s the only thing that can kill you that quickly, like I just dropped.”
Earlier, in a conversation with TMZ, Dick expressed a casual attitude towards drug use, mentioning he does not mind “doing a little crack [cocaine] every now and then.” He later clarified that his comments were intended humorously, stating, “I jokingly said ‘a little crack every now and then [is] not gonna kill anybody,’ but it killed me.”
According to reports, Dick was socializing with friends on the evening of the incident when he encountered a stranger who appeared to be using crack cocaine. He admitted to briefly stepping away to try drugs from the individual. “There was a guy that was my age and I felt for him,” he said. “He was depressed and he was on the sidewalk … and then he whipped out [what looked like] crack. And I’m like, you know what, I might need a little bit of that.”
Response and Recovery
Witness Shawn Harrell, who arrived on the scene, described Dick’s condition as critical. “He was blue. His hands [were] blue and his face was blue,” Harrell told People. “His body was limp. It was like deadweight. … I thought he passed away.” After receiving Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, Dick reportedly recovered enough to leave the area with a friend, avoiding hospitalization.
Despite his brush with death, Dick’s history with substance use is well-documented. He has faced multiple legal issues related to drug and alcohol use, including arrests for public intoxication, drug possession, sexual misconduct, and domestic violence. A recent report from TMZ indicated that he generally consumes more alcohol than drugs.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with substance use, particularly the risks posed by potent opioids like fentanyl. As discussions around addiction and recovery continue, Dick’s experience highlights the urgent need for awareness and support for those struggling with substance abuse.
