Ohio State University has secured its first linebacker commitment for the 2027 recruiting class. Quinton Cypher, a four-star prospect, announced his decision to join the Buckeyes on Friday. The talented athlete chose Ohio State over offers from prominent programs, including Alabama, Georgia, and Miami.

Cypher, who hails from Millbrook High School in Raleigh, North Carolina, is currently ranked as the No. 194 overall prospect and the No. 11 linebacker in the 247Sports composite rankings. Standing at 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 220 pounds, he is well-positioned to contribute significantly to Ohio State’s defensive lineup.

During his junior year, Cypher recorded impressive statistics, finishing the season with 181 tackles and 5.5 sacks. His performance has solidified his reputation as a formidable player on the field. Following a visit to Ohio State on November 1, 2023, and another trip to Georgia two weeks later, Cypher made the decision to commit to the Buckeyes.

Cypher’s Role in Ohio State’s Future Defense

As the first linebacker recruit under the guidance of linebackers coach James Laurinaitis for the 2027 class, Cypher’s commitment marks an important step for Ohio State. Laurinaitis, a former Buckeyes standout, is expected to play a crucial role in developing Cypher’s skills as he transitions to the collegiate level. Cypher’s commitment adds to a growing defensive roster, as he becomes the eighth member of Ohio State’s 2027 recruiting class and the third defensive player to join so far.

The Buckeyes recently concluded their 2026 recruiting class, which has now been finalized and signed. With this latest commitment, Ohio State is actively shaping its future team, focusing on strengthening its defense for upcoming seasons.

Cypher’s choice to join Ohio State highlights the university’s continued appeal to top-tier talent in college football. As the program looks ahead, the addition of promising recruits like Cypher is vital for maintaining its competitive edge in the sport. With a strong foundation being built, the Buckeyes aim for success in both the 2026 and 2027 seasons.
