URGEN UPDATE: Montcalm Community College (MCC) has reported a staggering enrollment increase of 16.2%, with 2,035 students registered this fall. This marks a significant rebound from the pandemic’s impact, as the college’s enrollment had dropped to historic lows just five years ago.

During a pivotal meeting on Tuesday, MCC President Bradley Barrick shared the remarkable growth figures, revealing that the college is now the leader among Michigan community colleges in enrollment growth. Last year, MCC recorded 1,751 students, showcasing the impressive recovery and demand for education at the institution.

MCC’s spring enrollment also shows promise, with 1,654 students already registered, a notable increase of 16.54% compared to last year. Barrick expressed his astonishment at the numbers, stating, “It’s mind-blowing. I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re going to lead the state again in enrollment in the spring.”

The surge is attributed to effective strategies implemented by MCC’s Dean of Student and Enrollment Services Francisco Ramirez and his dedicated team. Barrick praised their efforts, emphasizing the positive trajectory as MCC aims to exceed its previous high of 2,328 students from fall 2009.

The growth in dual enrollment has been particularly striking. This fall, MCC welcomed 704 dual-enrolled students, surpassing last spring’s 664. This represents a remarkable 134% increase from just 349 high school students enrolled in fall 2020.

MCC is expanding its reach into Ionia County, where Belding High School leads with 88 dual-enrolled students. Barrick noted the importance of building relationships with local schools and addressing the logistical challenges faced by students traveling from Ionia County, which is over 20 miles away from MCC’s Sidney campus.

In response to the growing demand, Barrick mentioned that options are being explored for a potential physical presence in Ionia, including partnerships with local institutions. “We are on the front end of those conversations,” he stated, highlighting the need for accessible education for all students.

As MCC continues to grow, the college is committed to enhancing student services and ensuring that it meets the needs of its diverse student body. The latest enrollment figures are expected to keep rising as the college gears up for the spring semester, with Barrick expressing confidence in the trend.

This remarkable turnaround in enrollment at Montcalm Community College underscores the resilience of educational institutions in the face of challenges and reflects a growing commitment to accessible education in Michigan. The community and prospective students are eagerly watching as this story develops.
