UPDATE: The New Lenox Public Library has just opened a vital care cabinet in its lobby, offering essential items and Narcan to community members in need. This initiative, launched on December 4, 2023, responds directly to the urgent needs of residents facing resource shortages.

The cabinet provides free hygiene products, first-aid supplies, and Narcan, a lifesaving medication that reverses opioid overdoses. Library executive director Michelle Krooswyk emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “We want to support you, and we want you to feel safe asking for help.” The cabinet is designed to be a judgment-free zone, ensuring that those in need can access these resources without fear.

This timely initiative was made possible by a $1,000 grant from the Friends of The New Lenox Library. Originally scheduled for a January 2026 launch, the opening was expedited due to recent cuts to federal assistance programs affecting low-income families. Library staff moved quickly to address this growing community need, with administrative coordinator Melissa Seaberg playing a crucial role in the cabinet’s rapid implementation.

The care cabinet has already demonstrated its impact, with essential items like lip balm and gloves quickly running out. Seaberg noted, “This shows the community need is real. We want to provide assistance in a dignified way.” The library collaborates with the Heroin Epidemic Relief Organization to distribute Narcan, further enhancing its support for those affected by opioid-related issues.

Krooswyk also expressed gratitude for the community’s proactive response, as residents have begun donating supplies to the cabinet. However, to maintain hygiene standards, library staff request that donations be made in the form of monetary contributions or through an Amazon wish list set up specifically for the cabinet.

The care cabinet’s launch is part of a broader effort to ensure the library serves as a resource hub beyond just books. Krooswyk highlighted various support services available, including tech assistance for older adults and a warm space for those experiencing homelessness. “We want the library to be a place where everyone feels welcome,” she said.

Looking ahead, the library plans to continue expanding its offerings. The crocheted cat fundraiser, initiated by Seaberg, aims to raise additional funds for the care cabinet, with the event concluding on December 16. “We’re trying to find fun and lighthearted ways to engage the community,” Seaberg stated, referring to the themed crocheted kittens that have captured local interest.

As the New Lenox Public Library approaches its 25th anniversary next year, Krooswyk confirmed that discussions for further renovations are underway to enhance the library’s capacity to serve its community. A new café space is set to open in January 2024, along with a winter reading program.

The care cabinet will remain available during library hours, ensuring that essential resources are accessible to those who need them most. The swift response to local needs reflects the library’s commitment to being a cornerstone of support in the New Lenox community.

Stay tuned for further updates as this initiative continues to evolve, showcasing the library’s responsiveness to urgent community needs.
