UPDATE: New York Governor Kathy Hochul just announced an exciting initiative for outdoor enthusiasts: the annual First Day Hikes program will kick off on January 1, 2026, with free hikes at 117 locations statewide, including the stunning Hudson Valley and Catskills.

Join fellow New Yorkers to embrace the New Year by stepping into nature. “Kick off the new year in the great outdoors and put your mental and physical wellness first,” said Hochul in her statement. The hikes promise to be a fantastic and affordable way to enjoy the winter beauty of New York’s public lands while connecting with friends and family—distraction-free.

The event is organized by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, the Department of Environmental Conservation, and the Canal Corporation. As part of this initiative, the usual parking fees at state parks will be waived on January 1, making it even easier to participate.

“They offer a welcome break from the holiday rush and a chance to reconnect with nature and one another,” said Kathy Moser, Acting Commissioner of New York State Parks. “This annual event encourages you to refocus on your mental and physical well-being and start the New Year on a healthy, positive note.”

In addition, Amanda Lefton, Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Conservation, emphasized that participating in a First Day Hike is a great way to get offline and enjoy winter recreation in New York State.

All interested participants can find detailed information about locations, formats, and any pre-registration requirements by visiting the following websites: parks.ny.gov/events/first-day-hikes, dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/hiking/first-day-hikes, and onthecanals.com.

This is a unique opportunity to step outside, enjoy the fresh air, and make lasting memories with loved ones as you welcome 2026. Don’t miss out on this chance to connect with nature and community—mark your calendars for January 1!
