U.S. Negotiators Visit Russia to Advance Peace Talks on Ukraine

American negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Russia on October 9, 2023, following what was described as a productive meeting with Ukrainian officials in Florida. The discussions aimed to further dialogue towards ending the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The meeting in Florida, which lasted over four hours, included a delegation led by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Ukrainian representatives. According to Ukrainian officials, the focus of the talks was on Ukraine’s future borders. Rustem Umerov, head of the Ukrainian delegation, characterized the discussions as “difficult” and “intense,” but noted a constructive dynamic was established.

In a recent statement, President Donald Trump commented on Ukraine’s internal challenges, referencing a corruption investigation that led to the ousting of Andriy Yermak, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s chief of staff and top negotiator. “Ukraine’s got some difficult little problems. But I think that there’s a good chance we can make a deal,” Trump said.

Umerov also reported that the U.S. has shown support for Ukraine throughout the negotiation process, saying, “The U.S. is hearing us, the U.S. is supporting us, the U.S. is walking beside us.” This sentiment reflects a shift from earlier proposals that were perceived as overly favorable to Russia.

In a warning, Putin recently stated, “When Ukrainian troops leave the territories they hold, then the fighting will stop. If they don’t, then we’ll achieve that through military means.” This assertion underscores the urgency for diplomatic efforts as military tensions continue.
