Survey Reveals Declining Biblical Worldview Among Americans
A recent survey conducted by the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University highlights a significant decline in the number of Americans who hold a biblical worldview. Despite discussions surrounding the assassination of Charlie Kirk and its potential impact on conservative Christian faith, the findings reveal that only 4 percent of American adults identified with a biblical worldview in both 2023 and 2026. This figure represents a stark decrease from 12 percent in 1994 and just 6 percent in 2020.
The survey, conducted in January with a sample size of 2,000 adult respondents, utilized both phone and online methods, providing a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points. Among younger adults, particularly those in Generation Z (ages 18 to 29), the share with a biblical worldview is alarmingly low, at just 1 percent. By comparison, 2 percent of Millennials and 7 percent of older generations, including Generation X, Baby Boomers, and Seniors, reported holding similar beliefs.
Categories of Worldview
The Cultural Research Center categorized respondents into three groups: Integrated Disciples, Emergent Followers, and World Citizens. Integrated Disciples represent individuals with a biblical worldview, while Emergent Followers are those who do not fully embrace a biblical perspective yet demonstrate beliefs aligned with biblical principles. World Citizens, on the other hand, may acknowledge some biblical principles but generally behave in ways inconsistent with biblical teachings.
The survey results indicate a broader cultural trend away from biblical beliefs, with ignorance of Christian tenets increasingly evident even within the church. Notably, only 12 percent of self-identified “born-again Christians” hold a biblical worldview, which, while three times higher than the general population, has dropped from 19 percent in 2020. The largest group of Americans identifying as Christian falls under the category of “Notional Christians.” This group includes individuals who label themselves as Christian but do not accept the necessity of personal confession and acceptance of Jesus Christ for salvation.
No Improvement Despite Increased Interest
Despite the heightened attention to faith matters following Kirk’s assassination, the Cultural Research Center observed no improvement in biblical worldview adherence. The surge in church attendance and Bible purchases immediately after the incident has not translated into a sustained increase in core beliefs among the population.
George Barna, a veteran researcher who led the survey, expressed concern over the findings, particularly regarding the youth demographic. He stated, “We are losing American society and all that it has historically represented because we have succumbed to the influence of the culture instead of the exhortations and promises of God.” Barna attributed the decline to the impact of entertainment, media messages, public policies, and flawed education on younger generations.
Despite these challenges, Barna noted that there is still hope for a revival of biblical principles through proper education in the Christian faith. He pointed to institutions like Arizona Christian University as vital in fostering a return to these values, asserting, “It is time to reclaim the culture for Christ.”
The survey results underscore a complex landscape for American Christianity, revealing both a decline in adherence to biblical principles and an urgent need for renewed focus on faith education. As society grapples with these changes, the implications for future generations remain significant.
