Iconic Guitarist Phil Campbell of Motörhead Dies at 64
URGENT UPDATE: Metal fans are grieving the loss of legendary guitarist Phil Campbell, who passed away on July 7, 2023, at the age of 64. His family confirmed the news on social media, revealing that Campbell had been in intensive care after undergoing “a complex major operation.”
Campbell was not just a musician; he was a beloved family man known as “Bampi” to his grandchildren. His family expressed their sorrow, stating, “He was deeply loved by all who knew him and will be missed immensely. His legacy, music, and the memories he created with so many will live on forever.”
The Welsh guitarist rose to fame in the heavy metal scene when he joined Motörhead in 1984, following the departure of guitarist Brian Robertson. Over an incredible 31 years with the band, he appeared on 16 studio albums, contributing to iconic tracks like “Deaf Forever,” “Eat the Rich,” and “Born to Raise Hell.”
Mikkey Dee, drummer for Motörhead, paid tribute, stating, “He was the funniest guy I have ever known and the best rock guitar player I have ever played with. His vibe and feel for rock music were outstanding.” Dee also expressed his condolences to Campbell’s family, saying, “Sleep well, my friend and rock soldier. Say hi to Lemmy, Würzel, Filthy, and Eddie.”
Tributes have poured in from fellow musicians and fans. Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses called Campbell “one of the most kind and FUNNY humans out there,” adding, “I will miss you, my friend.” Frank Bello of Anthrax reminisced about their time together on tour, highlighting Campbell’s humor and guitar skills.
Geezer Butler from Black Sabbath also shared his sadness, stating, “A truly nice man with a wicked sense of humour.” He recalled a memorable tour moment, saying, “Many a laugh was had on that tour.”
