Urgent News: Charles M. Payment Passes Away at 78 in Duluth
UPDATE: The community of Duluth, MN, mourns the loss of Charles (Chuck) M. Payment, who passed away peacefully on March 9, 2026, at the age of 78. His family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Beehive and Gentiva for their compassionate support and to caregivers Janelle and Christelle for their exceptional care during Chuck’s final days.
Chuck Payment, born on February 3, 1948, in Frankfurt, MI, was a beloved figure known for his dedication to family, community, and the outdoors. Following his graduation from Glen Lake High School in 1966, he pursued a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Michigan Tech. During his college years, he served as a Ski Patrol member and participated in ROTC, laying the groundwork for his future leadership skills.
After earning his degree, Chuck served in the Army Reserve for eight years, rising to the rank of Captain. He began his distinguished career in fuel transmission at Great Lakes Gas in 1972, where he contributed for nearly four decades until his retirement in 2011.
Chuck’s personal life was equally rich. He met his future wife, Alyce Heimsjo, at the Buffalo House in Duluth in 1973, and together they raised two children, Brooke and Cory. His passion for youth hockey was evident as he volunteered as a coach for Cory’s teams, often braving the cold to maintain local rinks. For 35 years, Chuck and Alyce were devoted season ticket holders of the UMD Bulldogs Men’s Hockey team, showcasing their dedication to community sports.
In retirement, Chuck embraced his love for the outdoors, spending time boating on Lake Superior, fishing, and hunting. He cherished unforgettable moments with his son Cory in Montana, fishing on Lake Michigan, and hunting in various locations, including Hinckley and South Dakota.
Chuck is survived by his wife Alyce, son Cory, daughter Brooke Day (Aric), and their children Leo and Elin Day, as well as his brother Leigh Payment (Linda). He was predeceased by his brother, Lou Payment.
A celebration of life is scheduled for March 21, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Duluth, with visitation starting at 10 a.m. A luncheon will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation or Trinity Lutheran Church in Chuck’s honor.
In a poignant reflection of his love for fishing, Chuck once said, “The two best times to fish is when it’s raining and when it ain’t,” a testament to his joyful and adventurous spirit. As the community remembers Chuck Payment, his legacy of kindness, community service, and love for family will continue to inspire those who knew him.
