Defense Secretary’s Comments on Controversial Strike Leave Questions
CNN anchor and chief White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins expressed her astonishment during a broadcast on Tuesday regarding comments made by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth about a controversial military operation. The remarks came during a cabinet meeting with President Donald Trump, where Hegseth addressed the events surrounding a boat strike that occurred on September 2, 2023.
Collins highlighted a specific moment from the meeting when Hegseth was asked if he was aware of any survivors following the initial strike. “What was most striking to me is what Jim Sciutto was just referencing, which was the comment by Secretary Hegseth when he was directly asked about survivors,” Collins stated. This particular strike has drawn significant scrutiny in Washington, with even some Republican lawmakers demanding clarity regarding the incident.
The discussion intensified around the timeline of the event. Hegseth had previously claimed he watched the initial strike live from the Pentagon’s situation room. However, when questioned about the second strike, he revealed he was not present when that decision was made. “I said ‘I’m going to be the one to make the call’ after getting all the information,” Hegseth explained. He noted that after witnessing the first strike, he did not remain for the subsequent operations, stating, “At the Department of War, we’ve got a lot of things to do.”
Collins pointed out that Hegseth’s comments could lead to increased scrutiny from Congress. The Defense Secretary also mentioned that he did not see any evidence of survivors during the second strike, shifting responsibility to Admiral Bradley. “I did not personally see survivors, but I stand… because the thing was on fire. It was exploded. Fire and smoke. You can’t see anything,” he said, indicating the chaotic nature of military operations, commonly referred to as the “fog of war.”
These statements from Hegseth have raised further questions about the military’s transparency and decision-making process during operations. Collins emphasized the significance of this new information, suggesting it may prompt a deeper investigation from congressional members as they seek answers about the military’s actions.
The exchange underscores the complexities and tensions surrounding military operations and the communication of such events to the public and lawmakers. As the discourse continues, the implications of Hegseth’s remarks will likely resonate within both political and military circles in the coming days.
