San Augustine has officially been designated as a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community, a recognition announced by Governor Greg Abbott. This certification comes after the city successfully completed a rigorous multi-step process established by the Texas Music Office. With this designation, San Augustine joins a network of Texas communities dedicated to enhancing the local music industry and reaping its economic and cultural benefits.

The Music Friendly Texas program, initiated in 2016, aims to promote economic growth linked to the music business. According to the Texas Governor’s office, the state’s music industry supports over 196,000 direct and indirect jobs and contributes more than $31 billion to the economy annually. Governor Abbott highlighted the collaborative efforts between state authorities and local communities, stating that these initiatives are critical for job creation and economic stimulation.

The excitement surrounding this certification was echoed by Representative Trent Ashby, who praised San Augustine’s rich history, vibrant culture, and strong community spirit. He described these elements as unique treasures of East Texas. The Governor’s office also emphasizes that music serves as a universal language, and San Augustine boasts several venues that are well-suited for artists to showcase their talents.

Betty Oglesbee, a member of the City of San Augustine Main Street Board, expressed the city’s eagerness to host musical events and productions. She pointed out the variety of venues available, including the Augus Theatre, the Cotton Gin Community Center, and a new high school venue that is nearing completion. Oglesbee underscored the city’s commitment to the arts and the potential for increased opportunities for local musicians and businesses as a result of the certification.

The official Music Friendly Texas Community Certification Ceremony is scheduled for December 5, 2023, and will take place just before the San Augustine Main Street’s Lighted Christmas Parade. This event will mark a significant moment for the city as it celebrates its new status.
