Kazuchika Okada is set to face his longtime rival, Hiroshi Tanahashi, in what will be a significant match marking Tanahashi’s retirement. The bout is scheduled for Wrestle Kingdom 20, taking place on January 4, 2026, at the renowned Tokyo Dome. Okada, a star in both New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) and All Elite Wrestling (AEW), recently confirmed his role as Tanahashi’s final opponent during an exclusive interview with NJPW1972.com.

Reflecting on Tanahashi’s upcoming retirement, Okada expressed mixed feelings. “Hmm, I’m not really sure I have an answer to that,” he remarked. “It doesn’t quite feel like he’s retiring. I think I won’t know for sure until the day itself.” Okada acknowledged that since he has been competing in the United States, he hasn’t fully grasped the significance of Tanahashi’s departure from the ring. He added, “I think it’ll be at the end of the year, when I’m finished with the AEW schedule, and next is the Tokyo Dome; that’s when I’ll be able to give it more thought.”

Okada highlighted the historical significance of facing Tanahashi, stating, “Everything about The Rainmaker started with Tanahashi, so it makes sense to end Tanahashi’s career.” He recognized the weight of the occasion, admitting, “Talking about it that way sounds a little self-centered,” but emphasized the personal connection he feels to the match.

When discussing his strategy for the retirement match, Okada maintained a focused mindset. “Yes, it’s a retirement match, but—and I don’t mean this in a weird way—in the end, it is a normal match,” he explained. “It’s the same as it would be a tag match on a local house show. Any match only exists in itself and never to be repeated.” With this perspective, Okada conveyed that he intends to approach the match with a competitive spirit, stating, “I’m just thinking, ‘How best can I really hit him where it hurts?'”

The anticipation for Wrestle Kingdom 20 is building, as fans eagerly await this historic clash between two of wrestling’s most iconic figures. As Tanahashi prepares to step away from the ring, Okada’s comments underscore the profound respect and rivalry that has defined their relationship over the years. The match promises not only to honor Tanahashi’s legacy but also to showcase the enduring spirit of professional wrestling.
