Maya Brady Makes History as Top Pick in AUSL Draft
Maya Brady has made history by being selected first overall in the expansion draft of the Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL) on December 1, 2025. The newly established team, the Oklahoma City Spark, chose the former UCLA Bruins star as they prepare for their second season. At just 24 years old, Brady’s impressive collegiate career has garnered significant attention, establishing her as one of the top shortstops and hitters in the nation.
During her time at UCLA, Brady earned Pac-12 honors and received national recognition for her exceptional skills on the field. Transitioning to professional play, she participated in the 2025 AUSL season with the Talons and also represented the Toyota Red Terriers in Japan’s Diamond Softball League.
Brady’s Professional Journey and Family Legacy
In her rookie season with the Red Terriers, Brady played a crucial role in securing the team’s third consecutive league championship. However, her debut in the AUSL faced challenges due to a hamstring injury that hampered her performance initially. Once she regained her health, Brady showcased her remarkable talent, reaching base in each of her first 10 appearances at the plate after returning from injury. Over a stretch of 22 at-bats, she achieved an impressive batting average of .500.
Brady’s selection in the draft has attracted attention not only for her athletic prowess but also for her notable family connections. She is the niece of legendary NFL quarterback Tom Brady. Her mother, Maureen Brady, also had a successful collegiate softball career. In a 2021 interview with The Athletic, Maya reflected on her family’s legacy, stating, “Knowing that my family is very successful, I think it puts a lot of good pressure on me. It’s not pressure like … I’m going to put shame on the Brady family name. It’s just good pressure. I love bearing the last name. I’m just really proud of it.”
As the AUSL gears up for its upcoming season, Maya Brady’s journey continues to inspire both fans and aspiring athletes. Her remarkable achievements and strong family ties highlight the growing recognition of women in sports, particularly in fast-pitch softball. The Oklahoma City Spark’s decision to draft Brady first overall signals their commitment to building a competitive team and showcases the potential impact of her presence on the league.
