Alexander Skarsgård Stars in Gothic Horror Film ‘The Wolf Will Tear Your Immaculate Hands’

Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgård is set to star in the gothic horror film titled The Wolf Will Tear Your Immaculate Hands, marking the English-language debut of director Nathalie Álvarez Mésén. This film is currently in production and is scheduled for release in May 2026. It will be Skarsgård’s first Scandinavian film in over a decade.

Nathalie Álvarez Mésén, known for her acclaimed film Clara Sola, which premiered at the 2021 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, co-wrote the screenplay with celebrated Icelandic writer Sjón. Sjón is recognized for his work on The Northman and the Cannes Un Certain Regard winner Lamb. In this new project, Mésén aims to deepen her signature style that combines intimate character narratives with elements of magic realism, expanding it into a darker and more haunting period setting.

In this challenging role, Skarsgård plays a British widower in the 1880s Pacific Northwest. He hires a Native American governess, portrayed by Darla Contois, who has been educated in a Christian mission school, to teach his two daughters. The film’s logline describes how the eldest daughter, while being prepared for an arranged marriage, begins to awaken to a force that challenges everything she has learned.

The daughters are played by British actress Bronte Carmichael, known for her roles in Star Wars: Andor and Christopher Robin, and Australian actress Lily La Torre, recognized for her performance in Run Rabbit Run. The supporting cast includes Forrest Goodluck, a Native American actor noted for his roles in The Revenant and How to Blow Up a Pipeline, along with Swedish actress Pernilla August, famous for her appearances in Star Wars and The Best Intentions.

Nathalie Álvarez Mésén expressed her excitement about working with this talented cast, stating, “I feel incredibly lucky to work with a cast who dive into their roles with such generosity, playfulness, and openness.” She praised Contois for embodying the character of Isabel with emotional depth and highlighted Skarsgård’s portrayal of the father as both truthful and volatile.

In discussing the film’s themes, Mésén noted that it explores breaking free from patriarchal structures and the idea of decolonizing one’s own body for future generations. Sjón added that Mésén’s unique vision brings together elements of dark Northern lyricism and warm Latin American poetry, enriching the narrative.

The film’s production showcases a strong creative team, including Hélène Louvart, a French cinematographer known for her work on La Chimera and Pina, and Belgian editor Marie-Hélène Dozo, who frequently collaborates with the Dardenne brothers. Additionally, Swedish production designer Lina Nordqvist and Icelandic costume designer Margret Einarsdottir contribute their expertise to the project.

Producer Nima Yousefi, CEO of the Swedish production company Hobab, emphasized the significance of the film, stating that Mésén’s distinctive voice was instrumental in assembling a prestigious team and securing complex multi-territory financing. The film has garnered international partnerships, including Resolve Media in the U.S. and several European co-producers.

Funding for the film has come from a mix of public and private sources, including Film i Väst, SVT, and the British Film Institute’s UK Global Screen Fund. Yousefi shared insights into the production process, mentioning that location scouting spanned 15 countries before selecting Belfast, Northern Ireland, for principal photography due to its similarity to the Pacific Northwest’s temperate rainforest.

As production continues, the final shoot is set to take place in the Gothenburg area of Sweden, and post-production will include visual effects work. The Swedish release will be managed by TriArt, a leading arthouse distributor, with international distribution plans expected to be announced soon.

With its rich thematic content and a talented cast and crew, The Wolf Will Tear Your Immaculate Hands promises to be a compelling addition to the gothic horror genre.
