Nurses at the Virginia hospital are set to vote on a newly negotiated agreement between the Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA) and Essentia Health. This tentative agreement comes after a series of discussions that began in July 2023 and culminated in a contract recommendation from the union bargaining committee.

The proposed three-year contract, covering over 100 nurses on the Iron Range, will remain in effect until July 31, 2028. The ratification vote will soon be held, allowing nurses to formally accept or reject the agreement.

Details of the Agreement

Negotiations between Essentia Health and the MNA involved ten bargaining sessions, highlighting the commitment from both sides to reach an understanding. Rhonda Kazik, chief nurse executive at Essentia, emphasized the significance of the agreement in a recent news release. “This milestone comes after productive discussions and reflects our deep appreciation for the extraordinary work these nurses do every day,” Kazik stated.

This contract aims to acknowledge the vital contributions of nurses and to enhance the shared mission of providing accessible and high-quality healthcare in the community. Kazik added, “We look forward to continuing our work together to ensure accessible, sustainable care for all on the Iron Range.”

The MNA has also expressed its support for the agreement, indicating that it represents a step forward for the nursing staff and the community they serve. The upcoming ratification vote will be a critical moment for the nurses, as it will determine the future of their working conditions and benefits under this new agreement.

As this situation unfolds, the outcome of the ratification vote will be closely watched. If approved, it will not only solidify the relationship between the nurses and Essentia Health but also reinforce the commitment to delivering quality healthcare in the region.
