DOJ Unveils Second Amendment Section to Strengthen Gun Rights

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced the establishment of a dedicated Second Amendment section, aimed at bolstering the rights of American citizens to bear arms. This initiative, led by Harmeet Dhillon, Assistant Attorney General for the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, is set to address critical issues such as the high costs and delays associated with concealed carry permits.

Announcing the new section, Dhillon stated that the DOJ is committed to ensuring that the right to bear arms is treated with the same importance as other civil rights. “I’m really excited about this,” Dhillon remarked. “For the first time, the DOJ Civil Rights Division and the DOJ at large will be protecting and advancing our citizens’ right to bear arms as part of our civil rights work.”

The newly formed section will tackle various challenges faced by gun owners, particularly concerning concealed carry permits. According to Dhillon, many citizens encounter prohibitive costs—often reaching into the thousands of dollars—when applying for these permits. Additionally, she pointed out that some jurisdictions impose unreasonably long delays on permit processing, while others may enact regulations that conflict with Supreme Court precedents protecting gun rights.

Dhillon emphasized the importance of gun rights for marginalized groups, stating, “Gun rights equalize the ability of those of us—women, people with disabilities, and others who might otherwise be more vulnerable—to protect ourselves.” She made it clear that the DOJ will actively engage with state and local courts to uphold these rights.
