Gophers Running Back Fame Ijeboi to Enter Transfer Portal in January

The University of Minnesota Gophers’ second-leading rusher, Fame Ijeboi, has announced plans to enter the transfer portal when it opens on January 2, 2026. Ijeboi, who hails from Folcroft, Pennsylvania, showcased his skills during the 2025 season, amassing 461 yards on 97 carries and scoring two touchdowns over the course of 11 games. His contributions increased significantly when starting running back Darius Taylor sustained injuries throughout the season.

As the regular season concluded, Ijeboi became one of ten players from the Gophers to declare their intentions to enter the transfer portal. His decision marks a notable shift, as he is now the most prominent contributor expressing interest in leaving the program. Taylor, who was Minnesota’s leading rusher last year, is set to return for his senior season in 2026. He recorded 572 yards on 119 carries, along with three touchdowns in nine games, despite limited play due to injuries.

The Gophers’ head coach, P.J. Fleck, indicated that the team anticipates the return of tailback A.J. Turner in 2026. Turner, a transfer from Marshall, had an impactful start to the season with 16 carries for 64 yards and one touchdown before suffering a season-ending injury during the Gophers’ 27-14 loss to California on September 14. He was initially positioned as the second string on the depth chart prior to his knee injury.

Looking ahead, Minnesota’s incoming recruiting class includes three new running backs. Leading the group is four-star recruit Ryan Estrada from El Paso, Texas, alongside three-star prospects Zeke Bates of Malvern, Pennsylvania, and Niko Castillo of Schuylkill Haven, Pennsylvania.

Additionally, senior backup Cam Davis, who transferred from Washington, will exhaust his eligibility after this season. Davis contributed significantly with 34 carries for 117 yards and two touchdowns during the regular season. True freshman Grant Washington also made a mark, accumulating 21 carries for 133 yards, primarily in lopsided games. Meanwhile, fellow freshman Tre Berry left the program in November, while Xavier Ford remains on the roster.

The Gophers now face a pivotal offseason as they navigate player departures and recruit new talent, aiming to strengthen their roster for the upcoming season.
