Jewish Leaders Condemn Bondi Beach Terror Attack, Offering Support

A devastating terror attack at a Chanukah event in Bondi Beach, Australia, has resulted in the deaths of at least 12 individuals and left approximately 29 others injured. The tragedy unfolded during a celebration organized by Chabad, marking a moment that should have been filled with joy and light. The leaders of Progressive Judaism, Rabbi Josh Levy and Rabbi Charley Baginsky, also voiced their shock and sorrow over the violent act. They offered their deepest condolences to the families affected and emphasized their solidarity with the Australian Jewish community during this unimaginably painful time. “Violence at a moment meant for light, gathering, and celebration is profoundly devastating,” they stated. “May the injured find strength to heal, may mourners feel supported, and may the light and resilience of Chanukah endure even in the darkest moments.”

The Board of Deputies of British Jews has reached out to its Australian partners at the Executive Council of Australian Jewry to express solidarity and discuss support measures. They have also contacted the UK Government, which is monitoring the situation closely. The Board highlighted the need for concerted international efforts to combat terrorism and antisemitism, which they deem shared global challenges.

Just days prior to the attack, the Board participated in a solidarity visit to Australia with the J7 coalition of international Jewish organizations, advocating for stronger measures against antisemitism.

The Conference of European Rabbis (CER), headquartered in Germany, expressed its devastation over the murderous attack that disrupted a festival of light with terror. In a statement, Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, the president of CER, stated, “We mourn with the Jewish community of Sydney and with the families mourning loved ones murdered in cold blood simply for being Jews. This brutal hatred, unchecked in the West, must be confronted and stopped.”

The Jewish Leadership Council (JLC), which is scheduled to host a public menorah lighting ceremony in Trafalgar Square, expressed its anger and sorrow regarding the attack. They intend to collaborate with law enforcement to ensure that events planned for the upcoming week proceed safely.
